CURRICULUM

Nata a Milano il 29/04/1989. Ho conseguito la laurea triennale in Biotecnologie Farmaceutiche a marzo del 2014 presso l’Università degli Studi di Milano. Durante l’internato di tesi triennale ho acquisito esperienza nella conduzione di test comportamentali e di trattamenti farmacologici sui ratti. Ho conseguito la laurea specialistica in Biotecnologie Mediche nel 2017 presso l’Università degli Studi di Milano – Bicocca (Monza), sviluppando una tesi finalizzata ad indagare il possibile effetto protettivo di sostanze di origine naturale sulla tossicità da beta amiloide e sulla trasduzione del segnale intracellulare in modelli cellulari umani.

Da novembre 2017 frequento il Dottorato di ricerca in Neuroscienze presso l’Università degli Studi di Milano – Bicocca, studiando i possibili effetti benefici di sostanze di origine naturale sulla tossicità indotta da beta amiloide e sulla neuroinfiammazione in modelli umani di cellule periferiche e centrali.

Potential role of natural extracts against Aβ cytotoxicity and neuroinflammation

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by deposition of amyloid beta peptide (Aβ) plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles, glutamate excitotoxicity and loss of neurons. Aβ-induced oxidative stress plays an important role in AD. Soluble oligomers are the most toxic species of Aβ and they induce cognitive deficit in AD patients. Aβ interacts with several intracellular signals, in particular PI3K/AKT and MAPK, which are also involved in modulation of autophagy, apoptosis and in Aβ and Tau processing. In the last years much attention has been focused on the potential role of using natural compounds, in particular hop and coffee, as neuroprotective agents to attenuate or suppress inflammation, oxidative stress and Aβ-mediated cytotoxicity. Hop contains flavonoids, aromatic molecules which have antioxidant, antinflammatory and antiatherogenic properties. Hop extract has anti-aggregating effects on Aβ and seems to prevent its production in cultured cells. Coffee has antioxidant properties and may have a protective role against cognitive deterioration, too.

In this project will be investigated the potential protective role of coffee and hop against Aβ toxicity in human cellular models. The anti-oxidant/inflammatory properties of hop and coffee extracts and their involvement in kinase signalling, autophagy, apoptosis regulation, APP cleavage and Tau hyperphosphorylation will be assessed. Correlation among inflammation, oxidative stress and glutamate excitotoxicity (glutamate uptake) will be also evaluated.
